Business Hazardous Waste Recycling & Disposal Program

As of Feb. 9, 2006, batteries, thermometers, fluorescent bulbs and electronics are prohibited from disposal in the trash.  Please visit our Recycling Resources webpage or call the County Hazardous Waste Recycling & Disposal Program at (408) 299-7300 for recycling/disposal options.

Introduction

Hazardous wastes such as lab and photo chemicals, paint, inks, motor oil, solvents and acids may not be disposed of in your garbage dumpster, down the sanitary sewer or storm drain, or on the ground. If disposed of improperly, these materials can pose a danger to public health and can pollute our land, water, and air. In other words, they must be managed separately, safely, and legally.

The County operates a program to provide affordable, convenient, and legal disposal of small quantities of hazardous waste produced by local businesses. Eligibility for this program is based on the amounts and type of business hazardous wastes, rather than on the size of the business.

Who Can Participate?

Businesses located in Santa Clara County that generate less than 100 kilograms (about 220 pounds or 27 gallons) of hazardous waste per month and accumulate less than one quart (1 kilogram) per month of wastes classified as "extremely hazardous" are eligible for the County Program.

When & Where?

Eligible businesses can drop off their hazardous waste by appointment at various facilities throughout the County. Contact the Santa Clara County Hazardous Waste Recycling & Disposal Program at (408) 299-7300 to schedule an appointment. In arranging an appointment, be prepared to list the type and quantity of waste you would like to dispose.

What Will It Cost?

The disposal costs will be determined by the type and quantity of waste your business would like to dispose. An estimated fee can be provided prior to participation. There is a minimum fee of $40.00 to use the drop-off program.

Materials Not Accepted

Ammunition, explosives, PCBs/dioxins, compressed gas cylinders (larger than 5 gallons), radioactive waste, medical waste, asbestos, televisions and computer monitors are not accepted.
