About the Winners...

Pacific Gas and Electric
Energy Efficiency Award

Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) is the primary provider and distributor of electricity and natural gas for Northern California.

Energy Efficiency: The traffic signal light emitting diode (LED) retrofit program, initiated by PG&E, gave an incentive to agencies responsible for traffic signals to replace high energy/low efficiency incandescent bulbs with new LED technology.

The benefits of this program include the reduction of a major source of electricity consumption and a reduction of the need for potentially harmful or polluting energy plants.

The retrofitted LED bulbs require 50% less energy than the incandescent bulbs they replaced. The cost savings to the City in energy reductions is about 30%. Bulb maintenance cost reductions of 75% to 90% are anticipated because an LED bulb lasts 7-10 times longer than an incandescent bulb.

Results: The City successfully retrofitted 3,000 traffic signals and was presented with a $295,000 rebate from PG & E. Not only do City taxpayers benefit through a reduction in the cost of electricity, drivers in Sunnyvale benefit from the safety and reliability of longer lasting and brighter traffic signals.

The retrofit program by the City has resulted in a continued commitment to use LED traffic signal bulbs for future replacements and has become the new City standard.

Peek Traffic Signal Maintenance
Energy Efficiency Award

Peek Traffic Signal Maintenance, Inc. designs and manufactures technically innovative solutions for the traffic challenges facing today's mobile society. Peek delivers reliable easy-to-deploy components, products and integrated software solutions that provide direct cost savings with high rate of return investment, increased road safety and streamlined efficiency for travelers without negative environmental impacts.

Energy Efficiency: The traffic signal light emitting diode (LED) retrofit program, initiated by PG&E, gave an incentive to agencies responsible for traffic signals to replace high energy/low efficiency incandescent bulbs with new LED technology. Peek Traffic Signal Maintenance, the City of Sunnyvale's contracted signal maintenance provider, worked with the City to install 3,000 LED traffic signal bulbs within the strict deadlines of PG&E's LED retrofit program.

Results: The City successfully retrofitted over 3,000 traffic signals. PG & E presented the City of Sunnyvale with a $295,000 rebate for the retrofit.

Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company
Pollution Prevention Award

Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company (LMSSC) is one of the major operating units of Lockheed Martin Corporation. LMSSC designs, develops, tests, manufactures, and operates a variety of advanced technology systems for military, civil and commercial customers. The LMSSC-Sunnyvale site has over 8,000 employees in over 40 buildings.

Pollution Prevention: LMSSC's storm water pollution control program expanded in 2001 to include the inspection, treatment and discharge of storm water runoff from new companies who became established on former Lockheed Martin property. Lockheed Martin conducts routine and special inspections to ensure the success of the program.

They also conduct educational outreach to employees through the company television and educational materials to employees. Annual training and certification of senior management is also conducted.

Results: Continuing a trend of two decades at their Sunnyvale plant, LMSSC's water management program achieved a 50% reduction of the heavy metals contained in their process wastewater and storm water discharges over the past year.

Since the 1990's, both of the programs have aided in a 99% reduction of heavy metals (copper, chromium and nickel) in the process discharges in wastewater and storm water to the Lower South San Francisco Bay.

Juniper's Corporate Headquarters in Sunnyvale employs nearly 1,000 employees, contractors and service operations.

Transportation: In 2001, Juniper implemented a Transportation Demand Management Program (TDM) which provides numerous incentives, on-site services and commute assistance programs for its employees to reduce the traffic congestion in Moffett Park.

Juniper identified a dedicated on-site transit coordinator to implement the transportation programs. The headquarters also houses on-site amenities to further benefit employees who use alternate transportation. Such amenities include the following:

  • Valet dry cleaning services delivered twice weekly
  • Mail and postage outlet
  • On-site dental service
  • ATM/banking services
  • Volleyball & basketball court
  • Fitness center
  • Showers and lockers
  • Full service cafeteria, coffee shop and company store as well as lunchrooms on each floor.
  • Power outlets for electrical vehicles

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
Waste Reduction and Recycling Award

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) is a global company that produces microprocessors, flash memory devices, and support circuitry for communications and networking applications.

Waste Reduction: The company donates office equipment, furniture and supplies to nonprofit organizations.

Recycling: Materials include office paper, cardboard, beverage containers, toner cartridges, scrap metal, wooden crates and pallets, plastics (wipes, shoe covers, plastic bottles, and latex gloves), and dry cell batteries. They send their landscape maintenance waste for composting.

Buying Recycled: In order to complete the recycling "loop", AMD spends over $100,000 per year on recycled-content office products such as paper office supplies, binders, clipboards, transparencies, Tyvek® envelopes, and tabbed dividers.
