Pollution Prevention
About the winner...
Network Appliance designed a state-of-the-art, energy efficient power and cooling system for its new mission-critical data center. By choosing onsite power generation instead of grid delivered power, the company eliminated transmission system inefficiencies thereby increasing power delivery efficiency. In addition, the new system utilizes the captured waste heat so less power generation is required. The system's increased energy efficiency results in an overall reduction in nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide production, which means less air pollution is generated.
Network Appliance included additional pollution prevention measures by choosing a natural gas powered rather than a diesel powered backup power generator. And, the company moved away from ozone depleting and hazardous refrigerants in its absorbtion chiller by choosing benign silica gel and water for refrigeration.
