Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)

Many of the products that we use in our homes contain potentially hazardous ingredients and require special care to dispose. It is illegal to dispose of hazardous waste products in the garbage, down storm drains, or onto the ground.

Sunnyvale hosts household hazardous waste events every third Saturday monthly from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., except December.  Sunnyvale residents do not need to make an appointment at Sunnyvale events.  Sunnyvale residents who want to attend an event in other drop off locations may either schedule an appointment with the Santa Clara County Household Hazardous Waste Program, or call for an appointment at (408) 299-7300.

What is hazardous waste?  There are 3 types of hazardous waste:

How can I get rid of hazardous waste? There are disposal options!

Reduce household hazardous waste by using all of the product or disposing of unwanted hazardous products at the drop off events.  Avoid using hazardous products altogether and opt for safer alternatives.

Do not place hazardous waste or electronics in your garbage, recycling or yard waste carts.
