SMaRT Station® and Recycling Center

Bay Counties Waste Services, the City's solid waste service provider, operates the SMaRT Station and Recycling Center for the cities of Mountain View, Palo Alto and Sunnyvale. The SMaRT Station is a transfer station for recyclables and garbage, and offers the following special services and events.

The Recycling Center offers:

  • A Buy-Back Center for businesses and residents offering the current California Redemption Value on CRV-marked beverage containers
  • A drop-off area to recycle paper, plastic #1-7, glass, cans, electronics (computers, tvs), fluorescent bulbs, household batteries, motor oil and filters, antifreeze, auto batteries, and sharps (needles, syringes and lancets) 
  • Compost available to residents of Los Altos, Sunnyvale, Mountain View and Palo Alto

Self-Haul Dumping 

Residents of Mountain View, Palo Alto and Sunnyvale may dispose of trash, demolition debris, concrete, dirt and other materials at the SMaRT Station. SMaRT Station disposal rates are based on types of materials disposed per cubic yard.

Extra Dumping Weekends  

Sunnyvale residents may dump extra trash at the SMaRT Station at no charge during Extra Dumping WeekendsEvent hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. These Extra Dumping Weekends are provided for Sunnyvale residential customers only. While commercial customers and Palo Alto or Mountain View residents will be admitted, fees will be charged based on the type of materials.

SMaRT Station Tours/Video Tour  

Group tours are offered, by appointment, for visitors seeking to learn how garbage and recyclable materials from Mountain View, Palo Alto and Sunnyvale are processed and sorted for recycling at the SMaRT Station. Visitors in groups of 24 or less, aged 10 and older, must wear closed-toed shoes for protection. Or, you may elect to take our virtual tour via YouTube (requires QuickTime) to show how the SMaRT Station equipment processes materials. 

Birding Tours, guided by the Santa Clara County Audubon Society, are conducted on the closed landfill every first Wednesday of the month.
