Hotel Water Conservation Program

It has been estimated that by 2020, California's population will grow to 49 million, and as the state grows, so will the demand for water. Several options are available to stretch water supplies to meet demand. One way hotels and motels help is by using Sunnyvale's water conservation program to encourage guests to save water.

Sunnyvale offers overnight facilities an opportunity to participate in a water conservation and detergent reduction program endorsed by the American Hotel and Lodging Association. The program is simple to implement and is free of charge.

How does it work? Hotels and motels display water conservation messages in the rooms that encourage guests to save water by re-using towels and linens rather than having them washed and replaced every day. Messages also suggest to guests ways they can help conserve water in the bathroom as well. Through the use of these subtle messages, guests can choose to participate.

As a result, water and energy savings can be reduced as well as labor costs for laundering and maid service. At the same time, the hotel or motel is sending an ongoing message to its guests about the importance of protecting the Earth's natural resources. No matter what the season, conserving water and fostering a water saving ethic is important.

The Water Pollution Control Plant in Sunnyvale produces and distributes the water conservation tent cards for hotel and motel bathroom counters. Call the Water Pollution Control Plant at 408-730-7738 or email wpcp.sunnyvale.ca.gov for more information about our hotel/motel water conservation program.
