What do I do with my dead pet?
You can transport the animal to your local veterinarian’s office or the HSSV who can provide you with options for burial or cremation of your pet for a fee.

My neighbor’s dog bit me / my kid / a family member, how do I report it? 
You can report the bite by calling Sunnyvale Animal Control at (408) 730-7178.  Please be prepared to provide as many details as possible.  Where did the bite occur?  Dog owner name, address, telephone number.  Description of the biting animal.  Rabies vaccination information of the biting animal.

How do I report someone at the park with a dog not on a leash?
Please advise Parks personnel of the violation if they are on site.  You can also call Sunnyvale Animal Control at (408) 730-7178.  Be prepared to provide a description of the animal and the owner(s). 

I found a dog / cat and can't keep it, what should I do?
You can transport the animal to the Humane Society Silicon Valley at 901 Ames Ave., Milpitas. 

If you are unable to self-transport the animal, call Sunnyvale Animal Control at (408) 730-7178 and an Animal Control Officer may pick it up and transport it to the Humane Society Silicon Valley. 

I lost my dog / cat, did you pick it up, how can I locate it? 
The City of Sunnyvale contracts with the Humane Society Silicon Valley for sheltering services.  Dogs or cats picked up by Sunnyvale Animal Control are taken to the Humane Society of Silicon Valley for safe-keeping and care.  If your dog or cat is missing, please visit the Humane Society Silicon at 901 Ames Ave., Milpitas. or go to their website at HSSV.org.

I found a lost dog with a license tag, #SVxxxxx, how do I return it to the owner?
Call Sunnyvale Animal Control at (408) 730-7178.  We can attempt to contact the animal owner and arrange to have the owner reunited with the animal if possible.  Please be advised, Animal Control staff cannot provide the finder with the owner’s information without their consent.

You can transport the animal to the Humane Society Silicon Valley at 901 Ames Avenue, Milpitas for safe keeping.  HSSV staff will then attempt to notify the animal owner.

First time offenders of non-violent crimes may be eligible for Choices, a Juvenile Diversion Program.  This program is coordinated jointly between the Santa Clara County Juvenile Probation Department and the Department of Public Safety.  Please contact the probation department representative at (408) 730-7144.

Juveniles issued citation for pedestrian or bicycle related violations are usually eligible for Juvenile Traffic Diversion.  You can obtain additional information from the Crime Prevention Unit at (408) 730-7140

I'm late picking up the barricade / cones for my block party, no one is at the Corp Yard, what now?
If your block party / street closure has been approved, you can set up your own saw horses & cones. Be aware that you can be held civilly liable if an incident occurs because the barricades are not approved safety/visible sanctioned by DOT.

How do I check to see if there are open cases/complaints against a specific property?

My neighbor leaves their garbage cans out all week, doesn't put them in the back yard; behind the fence, what can I do?
Trash and recycling containers must be screened from public view from the public right-of-way or stored in the side yard of the premises behind the face of the house. The containers are permitted to be out the day before collection and must be removed from the curb by 6 a.m. the day after collection day.

Construction on a property may need to meet certain requirements and approval from either the City’s Building or Planning Divisions.

I received a notice / letter about a code violation, with a case number (NP #), what do I do?

I received a notice about signs in the windows of my business, what do I do?
Window signs must not exceed twenty-five percent of the window area per facade per establishment. Please contact the Neighborhood Preservation Specialist directly. The Specialist’s contact information is listed on the courtesy notice you received.

My neighbor is renting out their garage for living space, is that legal?
A garage is not designed or intended to be used for sleeping or living purposes. Illegal non-permitted garage conversions can create a health and safety issue in the community.

My landlord won't fix the plumbing, heating, windows/screens can you help?
California law makes landlords and tenants each responsible for certain kinds of repairs, although landlords ultimately are legally responsible for assuring that their rental units are habitable. Most issues pertaining to property maintenance do not constitute a violation of the Sunnyvale Municipal Code but rather are a private civil matter.

If you are uncertain of a code violation at your property or would like to request for an inspection of your unit, you may contact the Neighborhood Preservation Unit at (408) 730-7610 or by e-mail at np@sunnyvale.ca.gov.

My landlord won't do anything about bed bugs, what can I do?
Generally, pest infestations are considered property maintenance or housekeeping issues. To report pest infestations, you may contact the Santa Clara County Vector Control District at (408) 918-4770.

My landlord comes into my apartment when I am not home, is that legal?
California law states that a landlord can enter a rental unit only for the following reasons:
•           in an emergency.
•           when the tenant has moved out or has abandoned the rental unit.
•           to make necessary or agreed-upon repairs, decorations, alterations, or other improvements.
•           to show the rental unit to prospective tenants, purchasers, or lenders, to provide entry to contractors or workers who are to perform work on the unit, or to conduct an initial inspection before the end of the tenancy.

My neighbors tree limb / bush / hedge / flowers are blocking the sidewalk for foot traffic, what can be done?
Property owners are required by the Sunnyvale Municipal Code to prune any vegetation that is encroaching into the sidewalk and/or street. Vegetation in the park strip (area between sidewalk and street) or on a private property must not impair visibility of the street or sidewalk. Vegetation in the park strip must not exceed 2 feet in height in the park strip.

If I call to report an emergency from a cell phone, which number do I dial?
The number (408) 736-6244 is the same as dialing 9-1-1 in the City of Sunnyvale.  By dialing 9-1-1 from a cell phone you will be connected to an Emergency Dispatch Center closest to the cell tower being utilized.  This may or may not be Sunnyvale, depending on your location within the City.

How do I sign up to go on a ride-along?
To apply for a ride-along with Sunyvale DPS, contact Lt. Anthony Tani Atani@sunnyvale.ca.gov or (408) 730-7164.  An application may be picked up from the Records Unit during normal business hours.

Gun Safety Ordinance

Q:  What are my requirements to report a theft or loss of a firearm?

·         Any person who owns or possesses a firearm shall report the theft or loss of the firearm to the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS) within 48 hours from the time the theft/loss was known to the owner/possessor.  This law applies if the owner/possessor lives in the city of Sunnyvale, or if the theft/loss occurred within the city of Sunnyvale (9.44.030 SMC)

Q:  What are the requirements for storage of firearms within the city of Sunnyvale?

·         Except when carried on his/her person, or in his/her immediate control and possession, no person shall keep a firearm in any residence owned or controlled by that person, unless the firearm is stored in a locked container or the firearm is disabled by a trigger lock that is DOJ approved (9.44.040 SMC).

Q:  What are the restrictions of large capacity magazines within the city of Sunnyvale and what is the definition of a large capacity magazine?

·         No person shall possess a large capacity magazine in the city of Sunnyvale.  A large capacity magazine is a magazine that has the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds of ammunition (9.44.050 SMC).

Q:  Are there any exceptions to the large capacity magazine prohibition?

·         There are a number of exceptions to this prohibition.  The exceptions are:

o   Law enforcement while acting in the scope of their duty

o   Armored vehicle employees during the course/scope of employment

o   An individual issued a license or permit by DOJ authorizing possession

o   Licensed gunsmith for purpose of maintenance, repair, or modification

o   Lawfully possessing a firearm, prior to 1/1/2000, and no magazine designed for the firearm holds less than 10 rounds

o   Retired peace officer with a valid Carry Concealed Weapons (CCW) license

Q:  What are the requirements for vendors who sell ammunition in the city of Sunnyvale?

·         Ammunition vendors must maintain an ammunition sales log for all sales of ammunition.  This sales log must be on a form that is approved by the Chief of Public Safety.  The sales log shall be kept at the location of sale for a minimum of two years from the date of sale.  The sales logs shall be open to reasonable inspection by a peace officer at all times the vendor is open for business (9.44.060 SMC).

Q:  How will the Department of Public Safety enforce these ordinances?

·         Public Safety will enforce these ordinances the same as they enforce any other city ordinances.  When Public Safety Officers observe a violation of a city ordinance in the course and scope of their duties, they have the authority to take enforcement action.  Violations of these ordinances are misdemeanor violations.  Public Safety will conduct periodic compliance checks on the ammunition sales log requirement.
