The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety Fire Services Bureau prides itself on being a highly trained professional organization committed to providing outstanding response citywide and throughout the state. The Fire Services Bureau provides Emergency Medical Services, Fire Suppression, Hazardous Material incident mitigation, Rescue Operations, Confined Space Rescue Operations, Fire Prevention/Investigations, and Statewide Mutual Aid Response.
In addition to emergency response, we take pride in our high level of community involvement. Sunnyvale firefighters appear at community events to provide fire safety education; they serve meals to the homeless and to community seniors in many venues, they assist in the Toys-for-Tots campaign, collect waste pharmaceuticals to protect our waterways, host movie nights, and a very long list of engaging, educational and fun events!

The Fire Services Bureau at the Department of Public Safety is a proud part of the Public Safety tradition in the City. With 6 Stations and 12 frontline pieces of apparatus, the Bureau is fully staffed and prepared for any emergency. Fire based personnel are fully trained and ready to respond to any emergency or community needs. In 2008 the Department took delivery of four new Engines that are equipped with the latest technology for addressing disasters of any kind. Each piece of apparatus is staffed with two persons in Sunnyvale, with additional staffing coming from the ranks of on-duty Patrol officers. In Addition, off-duty Public Safety Officers can respond to an emergency to further enhance staff needs.
One of the advantages of the Public Safety system, where personnel are cross-trained as both police officers and fire fighters, is the inter changeability of staff and resources. At every emergency scene there is a need for Fire, EMS, and Police resources - for other jurisdictions these entities can not only be from different departments but even differing authorities and jurisdictions. A traffic accident may get a response form a State Agency like the Highway Patrol, perhaps a County Fire agency, and a private ambulance service. But in Sunnyvale, you get one agency and one unified command and control - a coordinated response from the same Department where personnel operate from the same page. Even our Paramedic response is coordinated from pre-deployed Sunnyvale stations for quicker response times. Sunnyvale residents enjoy some of the fastest response times in the State.
