MedDrop in Sunnyvale

MedDrop is a pharmaceutical disposal program designed to encourage environmentally-safe disposal of unneeded, expired, and unused prescription and over-the-counter medicines. This service is provided to citizens of Sunnyvale by the Department of Public Safety to facilitate a convenient and safe means of ridding our Community and our environment of unused medications.

On September 22, DPS personnel brought their mobile MedDrop bin to the Sunnyvale Senior Center as part of Pollution Prevention Week. They joined staff from the Water Pollution Control Plant who were providing a Mercury Fever Thermometer exchange.

Residents can bring their expired pharmaceuticals to any Sunnyvale Fire Station for disposal. Sharps or illegal drugs are not accepted. For disposal information about other items, please visit www.earth911.com

TipNow

Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS) has joined forces with TipNow to allow police to accept text messages and e-mail communications anonymously from the public. TipNow collects and manages e-mail and cell phone text messages and forwards them anonymously to DPS. When a text message or e-mail is sent to SVTIP@tipnow.org, TipNow provides an automated notification to police. TipNow does not replace 9-1-1 service, but is best used to send tips regarding non-emergency suspicious activity or crimes under investigation. The key aspect of TipNow is its ability to encrypt the tipster’s cell phone number or e-mail I.D., thereby guaranteeing the anonymity of the user.

Challenge Team Sunnyvale

Challenge Team Sunnyvale is a collaborative effort that brings community members, school administrators, non-profits, interested individuals, and Public Safety staff together once each month to focus on issues that affect our youth. The Challenge Team just completed its second year as an organization. The accomplishments include the presentation of parenting classes for “at-risk families;” the establishment of a formal mentoring process for Sunnyvale youth; collaboration between City departments, non-profits, and Sunnyvale School District; a soccer camp that focused not only on soccer, but on education, and personal growth as well; and a joint venture with the cities of Mountain View and Los Altos to sponsor a 25-mile bicycle ride to encourage fitness and family bonding.

Bicycle Licensing

California laws and the Sunnyvale Municipal Code require the licensing of any bicycle having a wheel diameter of at least twenty (20) inches and owned and operated within the City.  Licensing is performed at ALL Sunnyvale Fire Stations daily from 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Licensing cost per bicycle is $6.  (Cash only payments and please bring exact change)

The purpose of the bicycle licensing is as follows:

1. Provide an opportunity to inspect bicycles for required safety equipment.

2. Provide an opportunity to introduce riders to traffic laws and safe riding practices through lectures and/or literature distribution at time of licensing.

3. Provide means of identifying  ownership of bicycles and thus deter theft of bicycles, facilitate return of bicycles to owner, aid in prosecution of theft cases.

License Expiration: Bicycle licenses expire on December 31st of the second year following the year of registration.
