Mobile Home Fire Safety

Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS) Fire Prevention Specialists conduct regular fire safety inspections of local mobile home parks as authorized by California Code of Regulations (CCR) Title 25, Chapter 2, Article 6 § 1302.

Red Curb for Fire Lane
Our fire safety inspections focus on hydrants, standpipes, water supplies for firefighting operations, emergency vehicle access roads, lot identification, and general fire safety including open burning and abatement of weeds, debris and combustible material storage that present a fire hazard.

Owners and operators of mobile home parks are required by State Law to have hydrants and water supplies inspected and tested regularly to ensure they will operate properly when needed by the Fire Department. Owners and operators are also required to keep fire lanes unobstructed and accessible to emergency response vehicles at all times.

Homeowners are responsible for keeping lots and exterior spaces free of hazardous combustible material storage and following safe practices when grilling (Grilling Safety Tips 2013.pdf) and using open flame devices and equipment.

A Fire Safety Inspection Guideline specifically designed to help Sunnyvale park owners and operators prepare for our inspections and remain in compliance with the local Fire Code as well as an Information Bulletin offering fire safety tips for mobile home owners are available.

DPS is not the only Department that inspects mobile home parks. Staff from the State of California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) also have enforcement authority and conduct maintenance inspections in mobile home parks across the state. Please visit the Housing and Community Development website for more information on its role and regulations.
