Graffiti Removal Techniques

The most successful methods of removing graffiti are sanding or scraping it off, painting over it with similar colored paint, or removing it with solvents.  The method selected will depend on the type of surface and the substance to be removed. 

Surface Type

Removal Options for Spray Paint, Markers, & Similar Materials

Aluminum siding, fiberglass

  • Paint thinner (sparingly) then rinse with water

Glass

  • Scrape off with razor blade
  • Paint thinner or chemical graffiti remover

Masonry (cement or brick)

  • Power wash
  • Sand off
  • Paint thinner
  • Chemical graffiti remover applied with brush then rinse with water
  • Paint over with similar colored paint

Metal

  • Paint thinner or chemical graffiti remover
  • Rub with steel wool or sandpaper and rinse
  • Power wash
  • Paint over with similar colored paint

Pavement

  • Chemical graffiti remover
  • Power wash

Stucco

  • Paint thinner or chemical graffiti remover
  • Power wash
  • Paint over similar colored paint

Vinyl Siding

  • Use chemical graffiti remover sparingly as it may remove vinyl coating then repaint with primer

Wood

  • Use mineral spirits on unpainted wood or un-weathered wood
  • Power wash
  • Sand off
  • Paint over with similar colored paint
