Bicycle Licensing
California laws and the Sunnyvale Municipal Code allow for the licensing of any bicycle owned and operated within the City. The purpose is to promote the safety and education of bicyclists and to facilitate the return of stolen property to its owner. Licensing is performed at ALL Sunnyvale Fire Stations daily from 5 p.m. – 6 p.m, or otherwise when station personnel are available. Licensing cost per bicycle is $3. (Cash only payments; please bring exact change)
The purpose of the bicycle licensing is as follows:
- Provide an opportunity to inspect bicycles for required safety equipment.
- Provide an opportunity to introduce riders to traffic laws and safe riding practices through lectures and/or literature distribution at time of licensing.
- Provide means of identifying ownership of bicycles and thus deter theft of bicycles, facilitate return of bicycles to owner, aid in prosecution of theft cases.
License Expiration: Bicycle licenses expire on December 31 of the second year following the year of registration.
