Vehicles may be towed for, but not limited to, the following reasons:

• Stolen
• Embezzled
• Unregistered
• Abandoned
• Violation of city zoning codes/ordinances
• Unlicensed driver
• Driver with suspended or revoked license
• Vehicle used in the commission of a crime

The owner of a towed, stored, or impounded vehicle will need to come to Public Safety Headquarters (700 All America Way) to request a release.  Vehicles will only be released if the following provisions are met: 

• The vehicle must be currently registered or issued a valid moving permit by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
• The vehicle will only be released to the registered owner.  However in some cases the registered owner may authorize the release of the vehicle by letter.  The letter must include the name and driver’s license number of the person who will pick up the vehicle, and include a description of the vehicle including license plate or vehicle identification number (VIN).
• The registered owner or authorized person must have valid driver’s license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles. Or, they must have valid identification and be accompanied by someone who has a valid driver’s license.
• A VEHICLE RELEASE FEE OF $219.00 MUST BE PAID to the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety at the time of the release (CVC 22850.5).  Only Cash or debit cards will be accepted. 
• If you believe that your vehicle has been unlawfully towed, you may request a Tow Hearing by coming to Public Safety headquarters and filling out a Tow Hearing Request form, or requesting a tow hearing by phone.

Impound/Towing Fees

The registered owner is responsible for all charges for towing and storage placed on the vehicle by the tow company and by the City.   Contact the tow company for information regarding their fees.  After presenting the required documentation and paying the administrative fees, you will be provided with a release that must be presented to the towing company. You will then be required to pay additional fees related to the towing and storage of your vehicle.  Below is a list of Sunnyvaletow companies:
