Trees
The City of Sunnyvale maintains approximately 37,000 City street trees, with the assistance of adjacent property owners. A healthy "urban forest" has multiple benefits to the individual properties, neighborhoods and the City in general. Trees help to keep pavement and ambient temperatures cooler in the summer. They provide overall beauty to the street, and increase property values. All trees have features that require regular maintenance: leaves, acorns, insects and other pests, watering in dry seasons, etc. Residents are expected to take care of those routine maintenance items.
The City provides pruning services to street trees for structural integrity and to avoid branch/trunk failure, where possible. City staff also helps to sustain the street tree population with new and replacement tree planting. Concrete
Concrete program staff respond to calls for lifted or damaged sidewalks and curb and gutter. Through grinding, ramping, or repair, damaged sidewalk calls are responded to with techniques to improve accessibility and safe passage. Most minor irregularities are responded to within a few days, though replacement of sidewalks can be delayed several years, once the discontinuity becomes too great for other methods to alleviate. Contractors are also employed to make repairs when funding is available.
Curbs are repaired to improve drainage and avoid significant ponding problems.
