Sunnyvale Completes Major Bikeway Expansion
Sunnyvale, CA (01/23/03) -- The City of Sunnyvale has just completed the construction of 11 miles of new on-street bike lanes. This brings the total amount of bicycle lanes in the City to 33 miles, nearly doubling Sunnyvale’s bikeway network within the last three years.
The additional bike lanes are part of the City's ongoing efforts to promote and encourage bicycle travel and bicycle awareness. "The City is becoming a more attractive place to bicycle—whether it is a mode of travel to work or school, or for recreation" said Kevin Gregory, Chair of the Sunnyvale Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee. "We hope these additions to Sunnyvale's network of bike lanes will encourage those who live or work in the City to try bicycling."
The new bicycle lanes were designed and built using mostly outside grant funding from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District Transportation Fund for Clean Air program, the Federal Congestion Management and Air Quality program, and Transportation Development Act Article 3 funds. Mayor Julia Miller sits on the Board of Directors of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. "Bicycling as a means to improve air quality is greatly enhanced with the addition of these bike lanes," said Mayor Miller.
The projects are the result of a comprehensive bikeway planning effort. The City's Bicycle Capital Improvement Program, which was adopted in 2000, prioritizes projects for expanding the Sunnyvale bicycle lane network and encouraging bicycle travel. Sunnyvale is hoping to expand the bike lane network even further, with bike lanes along Evelyn Avenue under development.
