NEW SENIOR CENTER OPENS IN SUNNYVALE

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – The long-awaited Sunnyvale Senior Center will open to the public in Saturday ceremonies (July 19, 2003). The new Senior Center is the newest addition to the Community Center complex located at 550 E. Remington Drive, Sunnyvale. The complex includes the Community Center, an Indoor Sports Center, Community Theater, Creative Arts Center and Orchard Heritage Park, all amidst a park setting of grass, trees and fountains.

"The Sunnyvale Senior Center is a long-time dream come true," said Mayor Julia Miller. "The center is designed to serve the senior population with facilities and amenities that best serve this segment of our Community. In 1998, I made the City Council motion that initiated this center, and I am delighted to see this dream completed."

The 23,000 square foot Senior Center replaces the Adair Elementary School site of the old center. The design for the new center focused heavily on input provided by the Sunnyvale senior community. The new facilities feature large meeting and program activity rooms; a modern commercial kitchen; a stage; and arts and crafts facilities, including a ceramics kiln. Fitness and recreation rooms round out the offering.

The Sunnyvale Senior Center will begin serving the community on Monday, July 21. The $11 million facility was designed by the Steinberg Architectural Group and built by Thompson Pacific Construction and their subcontractors.
