SUNNYVALE, Calif. – The Sunnyvale City Council is considering adopting new restrictions on recreational vehicle (RV), boat and trailer parking in front yards. The hearings will address issues such as limiting the total length of a vehicle, requiring parking to be perpendicular with the street and limiting the length of time vehicles may be parked. The hearings will provide Sunnyvale residents with an opportunity to voice their concerns, and questions during this decision-making process.
Currently, the City does not prohibit the parking of RVs or any oversized vehicles in front yards. City requirements also do not address the aesthetic impacts that RV, trailer and boat parking may bring to residential neighborhoods. The City’s Municipal Code currently has three key sections – SMC 9.24.180, SMC 9.26.030 (19) and SMC 19.48.260 – that deal specifically with parking on private property. RVs, trailers and boats comply with current City regulations if they are parked on a paved surface and do not block visibility at a neighboring driveway.
