SUNNYVALE TO PROVIDE FREE GUN LOCKS

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – As part of its continuing effort to enhance public safety, the City of Sunnyvale will provide 1,300 free firearm safety kits to residents. This is just one of many programs that have earned the City its award-winning record for promoting a safe community.

The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS), through a partnership with Project ChildSafe, a nationwide firearms safety education program, will distribute the safety kits, which include a gun lock. The kits will be available at DPS headquarters and at various community events.

Sunnyvale residents are encouraged to pick up a Project ChildSafe safety kit so they can securely store their firearms. Each kit contains a safety brochure and a cable-style gun lock. The locks fit on most types of handguns, rifles and shotguns. The goal is to prevent a child or any other unauthorized person from accessing a firearm in the home.

The City of Sunnyvale was named the fifth-safest city of its size in the nation by Morgan Quitno Press in 2003, continuing a trend of top-five finishes in that annual survey. For more information about the City’s free firearm safety kit program, please contact the DPS Crime Prevention division at (408) 730-7199.
