SUNNYVALE CELEBRATES ARBOR DAY AT THE LIBRARY

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – In celebration of Arbor Day 2004, the City of Sunnyvale will plant a tree at the Sunnyvale Public Library. The community is invited to join Mayor
John Howe and representatives from the Sunnyvale Public Works Tree Division, the Sunnyvale Parks and Recreation Department, and the Sunnyvale Public Library on Saturday, April 3, at 10:30 a.m., to listen to stories about trees and to help plant a tree on the library grounds.

"Planting trees in Sunnyvale beautifies the City and improves the quality of our environment," said Sunnyvale Mayor John Howe. "Arbor Day is our opportunity to raise the community’s awareness of the importance of tree planting and care."

This year’s event focuses on reuse and recycling of trees, and will feature works of art created from recycled logs as well as demonstrations from PG&E on selecting the right tree for the right location and using logs from the urban forest as wood products. A City planner will also be available to answer questions about trees and tree-removal permits.

Since 1988, the National Arbor Day Foundation has recognized Sunnyvale as a Tree City USA. The foundation bestows the title to cities that have a tree department or board, a community tree ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

The Sunnyvale Public Library is located at 665 W. Olive Ave, Sunnyvale. For more information, call (408) 730-7505, TDD (408) 730-7501. More information on Arbor Day is available on the National Arbor Day Foundation’s Web site at www.arborday.org.
