SUNNYVALE PARKS GET A FACE LIFT
SUNNYVALE, Calif. – The City of Sunnyvale is renovating and upgrading Lakewood and Ortega Parks.
Lakewood Park was built in 1964, at a time of heightened interest space exploration. The park’s outer space theme is reflected in a new water feature, which will shoot mists of water on play surfaces decorated with shapes of stars and planets. Other additions include conversion of the existing skating rink to a mini skatepark. A gazebo with seating areas will be built on a knoll overlooking the park, giving park visitors a shady place to relax and enjoy the view of the park. The $480,000 project is funded by a voter-approved state bond. Renovation of Lakewood Park began in mid-March, and is scheduled for completion by fall.
At the Victorian-themed Ortega Park, opened in 1969, the play structure and the spray pool are now in need of renovation. In addition, the area must be upgraded to current accessibility standards. All existing playground equipment will be removed and replaced to make the facility more accessible to disabled citizens. New play structures, including a climbing wall, swing set and water play equipment will be added, along with new cushioned surface materials and mulched plant beds. The $500,000 Ortega Park renovation project began in early March, and is scheduled for completion by the fall.
