Sunnyvale Announces Community Award Winners

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – The City of Sunnyvale announced its 2004 Community Award winners at the Mayor’s State of the City Event on July 4, 2004.

• Network Appliance was presented with the Outstanding Environmental Achievement of the Year award for their work in designing a state-of-the-art, energy efficient power and cooling system for their new mission-critical data center.
• Bindu Gottipati of Wilcox High School and Aneta Pariaszevski of Fremont High School were both presented with awards for High School Senior of the Year. Bindu was nominated for her academic achievement and her hundreds of hours of volunteer work, while Aneta was nominated for her leadership in the classroom, on the playing field and in the community.
• Margaret Maletis was named Outstanding Community Volunteer of the Year for her myriad volunteer contributions, including membership in the Sunnyvale Historical Society, fundraising efforts with Sunnyvale Community Services and work with the local branch of the American Association of University Women.
• Richard Smith of Wyant & Smith Funeral Home, who has served the community through both his business and his civic volunteerism, was named Outstanding Businessperson of the Year.
• Dr. Gayle Cornelison of the California Theatre Center (CTC) was honored for Outstanding Contribution to the Arts, the first time this award has been presented. Dr. Cornelison and the CTC have presented nearly 14,000 performances in Sunnyvale to a combined audience of more than four million people.
• Geoff Ainscow was named Sunnyvale’s Distinguished Citizen of the Year for his selfless energy and vision of the future. Geoff spent 11 years on the Sunnyvale School District’s Board of Education Development, creating an environment that encourages cooperation over conflict.
• Jeanine Stanek was given the 2004 Mayor’s Award of Excellence for her long and distinguished record of service to the Sunnyvale Community.
