SUNNYVALE NAMES NEW PLAZA
SUNNYVALE, Calif. – The Sunnyvale City Council has selected Plaza del Sol as the name of the City’s newest plaza.
By direction of City Council, the Parks and Recreation Commission held a plaza-naming contest which received more than 400 entries from throughout the community. Names ranged from the whimsical to the serious, with many finding their roots in Sunnyvale’s history. The Parks and Recreation Commission pared the list to a recommended top 10 and then presented that list at the Council’s Tuesday (September 28) meeting.
Through a series of votes, Council eliminated one name after another until Plaza del Sol remained as the overwhelming choice.
Plaza del Sol, which is located at Evelyn and Frances Avenues in downtown Sunnyvale, opened to the public on July 7. Built above an underground garage, the 1.6 acre plaza took one year to construct at a cost close to $5 million.
