BIRDING AT THE LANDFILL
SUNNYVALE, Calif. – The Sunnyvale landfill is home to a variety of wildlife, and beginning November 3, bird watching – or birding – tours will be conducted free of charge.
The one-hour tours will be offered at noon on the first Wednesday of the month. Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes and bring binoculars; some loaner binoculars will be available at the tour. Protection from the sun – a hat and sunglasses – is also recommended.
Volunteers from the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society will conduct the tours. Frequent visitors to the landfill include Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets, Red-tailed Hawks, Mallards, Pelicans, Red-winged Black Birds and many others.
The slopes of the landfill were recently trimmed of brush by a herd of goats which, as part of a fire-prevention effort, spent several weeks grazing the landfill site. The Sunnyvale landfill is located at 1444 Borregas Avenue, north of Caribbean Drive. To attend one of the birding tours, please call Silviana Ruiz at (408) 730-7545, TDD (408) 730-7501, or e-mail sruiz@ci.sunnyvale.ca.us. Tours will be cancelled in the event of rain.
