SUNNYVALE, Calif. – Susan Denniston has been named Acting Director of the Sunnyvale Library, effective Monday, October 25.
Library Director Victoria Johnson announced her intent to leave the Sunnyvale Library this month to assume the role of Director of Library Services for San Mateo County. In her new position, Johnson will oversee 12 libraries and a bookmobile, serving a population double Sunnyvale’s.
The Sunnyvale Library has grown in popularity over the years and has become a focal point of the community. Circulation has grown to more than 2 million items per year, increasing more than 50 percent through a decade that saw Sunnyvale’s population grow by less than a quarter of that amount.
Denniston formerly was the Project Coordinator for Silicon Valley Library System, then became the Senior Librarian for San Jose Public Library. She joined Sunnyvale Library in 1989, becoming the number two person in the organization. As Administrative Librarian, Denniston has frequently stepped in as Acting Director when Johnson has been out of the office.
Interim City Manager Amy Chan says the City is actively recruiting a new director for the City’s Library and expects to make the appointment in early 2005.
