SUNNYVALE CITY COUNCIL NAMES NEW MAYOR, VICE MAYOR

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – The Sunnyvale City Council has selected Dean Chu as the fifty-fifth Mayor of Sunnyvale. Ron Swegles was designated by the Council to serve as Vice Mayor. Mayor Chu and Vice Mayor Swegles took office following a ceremonial swearing-in at the Council’s November 16 meeting.

Mayor Chu has been a member of the City Council since 2003. A long-time financial advisor, he has served on Leadership Sunnyvale’s board of directors and is active in community organizations. He was elected to the Council after serving two years on the Planning Commission. A 16-year resident of Sunnyvale, Mayor Chu holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of California at Berkeley, and a Master of Business Administration in Finance from Golden Gate University.

“I look forward to working with the City Council to continue our outreach to residents and the community at large,” said Chu. “And I want to continue Sunnyvale’s tradition of being a well-managed city with a bright future.

Vice Mayor Swegles also joined the Council in 2003, and has a long history of community service, including serving on the Sunnyvale Planning Commission, Sunnyvale Parks and Recreation Commission, Sunnyvale Senior Advisory Committee and the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. “I’m honored for this opportunity to continue to serve the Sunnyvale community,” said Swegles. “This promises to be an exciting year for our City.”

The Sunnyvale City Council is composed of seven councilmembers elected at-large for up to two four-year terms. The Mayor and Vice Mayor are selected from among the ranks of the Council and serve for one-year terms. Council meets most Tuesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. in Sunnyvale City Hall, 456 W. Olive Ave.
