SUNNYVALE NAMED FIFTH-SAFEST CITY

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – The City of Sunnyvale has continued its record as one of the safest cities in America. The 11th annual Morgan Quitno Safest Cities in America awards, announced Monday (November 22), place Sunnyvale as the fifth-safest city in America in its population group, 100,000 – 499,999. This is the ninth consecutive year in which Sunnyvale has been in a top ten listing.

The annual awards rank 354 cities across the nation and are based on the FBI’s 2004 crime report, which reflects data from 2003.

In the safest city rankings for cities of all sizes, Sunnyvale rated the highest of any northern California city, placing 18th.  Five southern California cities joined Sunnyvale in the top-20 listing for safest cities of all sizes.

“Sunnyvale’s record of safety is a tribute not only to our Department of Public Safety,” said Mayor Dean J. Chu, “but also our entire community. Each City department has played a role, and we certainly could not have maintained this record without the involvement of our community. By working together, our residents, neighborhood associations and City staff continue to maintain an enviable quality of life in Sunnyvale.”

Since 1996, Sunnyvale has never placed below fifth in its population class, and through the last eight years has always been ranked as one of the top 20 safest cities of all sizes, usually placing within the top 10.
