MUMMER’S PLAY AT SUNNYVALE LIBRARY
SUNNYVALE, Calif. – A Mummers’ Play, a Christmas tradition in the British Isles for hundreds of years, will be presented at the Sunnyvale Public Library.
In this folk drama, mummers, or “Guysers” present themselves at front doors and, upon being invited in, present a short play, generally in rhyme but often including music and dance. After the play, a hat would be passed before the actors moved to another household. Central to the play are the characters of Saint George, the dragon and a doctor who miraculously resuscitates all who are slain by Saint George.
This free play will be Saturday, December 18, at 1 p.m. in the Library Program Room. Children, their families and adults are all invited to attend. Sunnyvale Library is located at 665 West Olive Ave., across from City Hall. Free parking is always available, and VTA line 54 serves the Library.
