SUNNYVALE TO APPOINT NEW CITY ATTORNEY
SUNNYVALE, Calif. – The City of Sunnyvale has announced today (May 4) it will appoint David Kahn to the position of city attorney. Kahn currently is a senior deputy county counsel for Santa Clara County.
“We are very pleased to gain a city attorney with David’s background and experience,” said Mayor Dean J. Chu. “The city attorney plays a vital role in advising City Council and protecting the City. I am confident David will provide excellent leadership to the Office of the City Attorney and will be a valued resource to the City. I also want to thank Joan Borger, who stepped up to take on the role of interim city attorney during this recruitment process. Joan has made a great contribution and she will remain a valuable member of Sunnyvale’s Office of the City Attorney.
“I’m very excited to have the opportunity and privilege of working with the City of Sunnyvale and its Council,” said Kahn. “I look forward to working with Council to continue implementation of their vision of Sunnyvale as a world-class city in which to live and work.”
Kahn, a 1980 graduate of U.C. Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law, has served as a deputy public defender in Santa Clara County, a deputy city attorney for San Francisco, assistant city attorney for Bellevue, Wash., and the city attorney for Mercer Island, Wash., before returning to Santa Clara County as a senior deputy county counsel.
Kahn has been the principal attorney responsible for advice and representation of the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s office, Superior Court, Airports, Finance, Tax Collector and Grand Jury. He is experienced in redevelopment law, the Brown Act (open meetings law) and the Public Records Act.
Kahn is scheduled to start with Sunnyvale on May 23. His starting salary of $178,000 is based on a recent compensation survey of comparable cities.
