Sunnyvale Announces Community Award Winners

SUNNYVALE, Calif.Sunnyvale City Councilmembers will present awards to nine outstanding Sunnyvale community members At the State of the City celebration on July 4.

Mayor Dean J. Chu, who will present the State of the City address at the event, said the nomination committee had a difficult time selecting award winners from among the exceptional nominations they received.

“It’s a wonderful problem to have,” Chu said. “Every year we get terrific nominees, each of them a part of what makes Sunnyvale such a vibrant and diverse community. It’s a honor to be able to present these awards”

This year’s award winners are:

·         Linda Kilian has been chosen as Sunnyvale’s Distinguished Citizen of the Year for her 12 years of service on the Sunnyvale School District Board of Education. Kilian has also volunteered her time to several community projects for the school, district including serving as chairperson for two successful bond measures for the district.

·         Jim Davis and Joy Stanton are this year’s Outstanding Community Volunteers. Davis was nominated for his hard work and leadership as an advisor to the Homestead High School Key Club and Sunnyvale Middle School Builders Club. Stanton was nominated for her countless hours of volunteer service at the Sunnyvale Senior Center, Life Gardens and San Jose Tech Museum. She also serves as a Deacon at her church and is called “Grandma Joy” by the children of the church.

·         Adam Simms of Toyota Sunnyvale, who has served the community through both his business and his civic volunteerism, is the 2005 Outstanding Businessperson of the Year.

·         Sunnyvale Players will be honored for Outstanding Contribution to the Arts, for their 35 years of providing community theatre for Sunnyvale community members.

·         Paul Lesevic of Bellarmine College Preparatory, and Jessica Lorman and Siena Milia of Fremont High School will be presented with awards for High School Senior of the Year. Lesevic was nominated for his hard work, academic achievement and his hundreds of hours of volunteer work, while Lorman and Milia were nominated together for their leadership skills, academic achievements and strong work ethic.

·         Patricia Castillo will be presented with the 2005 Mayor’s Award of Excellence for her distinguished record of service to the Sunnyvale community.
