SUNNYVALE TO HOLD PUBLIC HEARING ON ONIZUKA CLOSURE
SUNNYVALE, Calif. – Following the recommendation by the Department of Defense (DOD) to close Onizuka Air Force Station, the City of Sunnyvale is seeking public input on possible community impacts. The City will hold a public hearing Thursday, July 7, at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, 456 W. Olive Ave.
As part of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process, the recommended Onizuka closure and subsequent move to Vandenburg Air Force Base is an effort by the federal government to reorganize its military installations to operate more efficiently and effectively. An independent BRAC commission is currently reviewing the DOD recommendation and is scheduled to report its findings by September 8. The president will then approve or reject the commission’s recommendations by September 23.
Onizuka occupies 23 acres of land at the corner of Mathilda Ave. and Highway 237, and operates a military satellite communications system. Onizuka has 278 employees.
