SUNNYVALE DOWNTOWN DEMOLITION BEGINS

SUNNYVALE, Calif. A parking garage at Sunnyvale’s Town Center Mall began coming down today (Wednesday, August 3) as the first step in redeveloping Sunnyvale’s downtown.

The demolition will raze the parking structure adjacent to Mathilda Avenue and the mall building over the next three months. New construction will reopen the original street grid through the area as a traditional downtown is built on the site. When completed, the redevelopment will include one million square feet of retail space, a quarter-million square feet of office space, 292 for-sale housing units and a multiplex theater.

Demolition is scheduled to be completed by late October 2005, with new downtown businesses beginning to open in late summer 2007. The existing Macy’s and Target department stores will remain open throughout the redevelopment construction.
