BIRDING RETURNS TO SUNNYVALE LANDFILL

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – Birding, the art and sport of bird watching, will return to the Sunnyvale landfill Wednesday, September 7. The Wednesday programs, which began last October, have proven to be immensely popular.

The Sunnyvale landfill is home to a variety of wildlife and many different species are typically spotted during the free one-hour tours. Volunteers from the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society will conduct the tours. Frequent visitors to the landfill include Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets, Red-tailed Hawks, mallards, pelicans, Red-winged Black Birds and many others.

Once again, tours will be offered at noon on the first Wednesday of the month. Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes and bring binoculars; a limited number of loaner binoculars are available for the tour. Protection from the sun – a hat and sunglasses – is also recommended.

The Sunnyvale landfill is located at 1444 Borregas Avenue, north of Caribbean Drive. To attend one of the birding tours, please call Silviana Ruiz at (408) 730-7545, TDD (408) 730-7501, or e-mail sruiz@ci.sunnyvale.ca.us. Tours will be cancelled in the event of rain. Because of limited parking, birders are encouraged to carpool to the tours.
