SUNNYVALE BALLOT MEASURES PASS; NEW MEMBERS TO JOIN CITY COUNCIL
SUNNYVALE
, Calif. – Four of five measures placed on the November 8 ballot by the City of Sunnyvale passed in yesterday’s (November 8) voting. Measures D and E will increase the City’s Business License Tax and Transient Occupancy (Hotel) taxes, while measures F and H approved changes to the City’s charter. Measure G, which would have amended the City Charter to follow state law by eliminating a residency requirement for the city manager, failed.
Passage of the two tax increases will, over time, return a projected $1.4 million in additional annual revenues to the City, providing a significant offset to the $1.75 million budget imbalance.
Three seats on the City Council were also decided in voting. While the results will not be officially certified by the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters for several weeks, returns indicate that Tony Spitaleri will assume Council seat 1, which has been held by Councilmember Fred Fowler, and Chris Moylan will assume Council seat 2, which has been held by Councilmember Julia Miller. Both Councilmembers have reached their term limit of two terms in office. Council seat 3 has been held by Councilmember John Howe, who won reelection to a second four-year term.
Mayor Dean Chu congratulated the new Councilmembers, saying “I look forward to working with our new Council. We have important work ahead as we continue to strengthen the City and its bonds with the community. I expect the new Council will continue the City’s tradition of being very responsive to the needs and desires of our residents.”
The new Council members are tentatively scheduled to take their seats for the first time at the regular Council meeting Tuesday, November 29. A new mayor and vice mayor will be selected by the Council that same evening. Sunnyvale’s government access television station, KSUN-15, will broadcast the meeting live.
