SUNNYVALE CITY COUNCIL NAMES NEW MAYOR, VICE MAYOR

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – The Sunnyvale City Council has selected Ron Swegles as the fifty-sixth Mayor of Sunnyvale. Otto Lee was designated by the Council to serve as Vice Mayor. Mayor Swegles and Vice Mayor Lee took office following a ceremonial swearing-in at the Council’s November 29 meeting.

Mayor Swegles has been a member of the City Council since 2003. A Navy veteran, Swegles represents Sunnyvale on a number of organizations, including the Military Affairs Council, League of California Cities Housing and Community Development Policy Committee, VTA Policy Advisory Committee and Bay Area Water Transit Authority, among others. A 1992 graduate of Leadership Sunnyvale, Swegles has a long history of community service, including serving on the Sunnyvale Planning Commission, Sunnyvale Parks and Recreation Commission, Sunnyvale Senior Advisory Committee, and the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

“It is an honor to be selected Mayor of Sunnyvale, and I look forward to working with my Council colleagues in shaping Sunnyvale’s future,” said Mayor Swegles.

“This is an important time in our City’s history, as we continue to shape our services to the community based on new economic realities. I plan to work hard to expand the partnership we have with our residents in order to keep Sunnyvale as the best place to live and work in Silicon Valley. I also want to give credit to our excellent City staff, without whose hard work, this Council could not be as effective as it is, and I look forward to working closely with them this year.”

Vice Mayor Lee has also served on the City Council since 2003. A 2001 graduate of Leadership Sunnyvale, Lee is a registered patent attorney and holds the rank of Commander in the Navy Reserve. A past planning commissioner, Lee has also served as chair of the Planning Commission. A graduate of Hastings School of Law, Lee has been admitted to the State Bar in California and Washington, D.C., as well as U.S. Federal Courts and the U.S. Court of International Trade.

The Sunnyvale City Council is composed of seven Councilmembers elected at-large for up to two four-year terms. The Mayor and Vice Mayor are selected from among the ranks of the Council and serve for one-year terms. Council meets most Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. in Sunnyvale City Hall, 456 W. Olive Ave.
