SUNNYVALE’S STATE OF THE CITY A SUNNY SUCCESS
SUNNYVALE, Calif. – More than 1,500 people turned out for Sunnyvale’s 26th annual State of the City celebration July 4. Visitors to the event enjoyed beautiful weather, a barbecue lunch and festive music provided by the Air National Guard Band of the West Coast. Following a performance of The Star Spangled Banner by Santa Clara Sheriff’s Deputy Nathan Negosa, Sunnyvale Mayor Ron Swegles delivered his State of the City address.
“The state of our City is strong, and getting stronger,” Mayor Swegles reported. One of the keys to the City’s prosperity, the mayor said, is the Town Center Mall redevelopment project, adding that the City remains “committed to building a downtown that’s a gathering place, a place to shop and a place for entertainment.”
The mayor also called on the Sunnyvale community to take an active role in their government. “I and my Council colleagues are committed to running the City with integrity and fiscal responsibility, but we need [the community’s] input to help guide Sunnyvale into its bright future.”
Following the address, Council presented the 2006 Sunnyvale Community Awards, which included the Mayor’s Award of Excellence, presented to longtime Sunnyvale resident and business-owner Vince Cala.
