Seven Explorers from Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS) have completed an intensive joint police academy training program. For the first time in several years, five cities – Morgan Hill, Gilroy, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, Campbell – worked together to stage the joint police academy for a total of 20 candidates.
Academy candidates underwent training eight hours a day for seven full days. Each candidate received training in a wide variety of procedures, including the system of American justice, defensive tactics, physical training, juvenile justice, cultural diversity and crime scene investigation.
The DPS Explorer program currently has 15 members. Member training includes police and fire training and ride-alongs. Explorers are used to assist DPS members during many events in the City, including the Art & Wine festival, DUI checkpoints and auto-extrication seminars.
Explorers meet the first and third Wednesdays of each month. If you are interested in joining, everyone between 14 and 20 years old is welcome to come to a meeting to see what Explorers do. Please call before attending to confirm the meeting dates. For more information about the Sunnyvale Explorers call (408) 730-7140, TDD (408) 730-7501.
