SUNNYVALE TO DISTRIBUTE MULTI-FAMILY RECYCLING TOTES

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – The City of Sunnyvale, in partnership with Specialty Solid Waste and Recycling, is undertaking the second distribution of recycling tote bags to residents with multi-family recycling service, such as those living in apartments or town homes. Distribution will begin Monday, October 23, to residents with either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday recycling collection days. Along with the totes, the City will distribute a clip magnet and an information card on how to use the recycling tote. This will complete the distribution that began in November 2005.

The tote is designed to make it easy to collect and carry recyclable materials to outdoor recycling carts on residents’ property. On-site multi-family recycling service includes a two-cart system. One cart is for glass, metal and plastic food and beverage containers such as soup, peanut butter, tuna, vegetables soda, milk, water, and juice. Non-toxic household product containers such as those for laundry detergent and dish soap are also acceptable.  Containers should be emptied before being placed in the tote. The other outdoor recycling cart is for newspapers, newspaper inserts and telephone books.

The tote can be reused and may be rinsed or washed as needed.

The City of Sunnyvale currently diverts 61 percent of materials from landfill disposal through recycling or other means, more than the amount required by state law. More information on the recycling totes is available by calling (408) 730-7262, TDD (408) 730-7501.
