Deadline NEARS for Submitting Notice of Interest

in Onizuka PROPERTY

For Nonprofit and Government Agencies Interested in Onizuka Property

SUNNYVALE, Calif. –The Sunnyvale City Council, serving as the Onizuka Local Redevelopment Authority (LRA) for Onizuka Air Force Station, is seeking notices of interest (NOIs) for surplus property at the installation from state and local governments, homeless service providers and other interested parties. The deadline for filing an NOI is 5 p.m., Tuesday, December 5, 2006.

A listing of surplus property at Onizuka Air Force Station was published by the Department of Defense in the Federal Register, May 30, 2006.

NOIs for homeless assistance may be submitted by any state or local government agency or private nonprofit organization that provides – or proposes to provide – services to homeless persons and/or families living in Sunnyvale.

While the LRA is responsible for preparing a reuse plan, a key step is an invitation for interested parties to submit an NOI. Under the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process, federal, state and local agencies are given an opportunity to express an interest in reusing surplus government sites before the property is disposed of. By fall 2007, the LRA will have received input from the Citizens’ Advisory Committee and will have developed a reuse plan that will be submitted to DOD. DOD will then have one year – until fall 2008 – to issue a formal record of decision which will describe how the base will be transferred. Under BRAC guidelines, the Onizuka closure must be completed by September 15, 2011.

Application information for all agencies considering an NOI, dates of public meetings and related BRAC Onizuka information are available at the City’s Web site Onizuka.inSunnyvale.com. Those interested in obtaining property through a public benefit conveyance (PBC), other than a homeless assistance conveyance, are invited to contact the appropriate federal agency offices to find out more about each agency’s PBC program and to discuss the possibility of qualifying for a conveyance of property.
