SUNNYVALE NAMES NEW COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR
SUNNYVALE, Calif. – The City of Sunnyvale has named Hanson Hom its new Director of Community Development. Hom, who will join the City June 4, will replace retiring director Bob Paternoster.
Sunnyvale’s Community Development Department (CDD) operates five divisions, including Building, Planning, Economic Development, Housing and Neighborhood Preservation.
Hom says he is looking forward to joining Sunnyvale particularly at this point in time, as the Sunnyvale Town Center redevelopment project is restarting. “Town Center is a pivotal project for Sunnyvale,” Hom said. “It can rejuvenate the City and help create an identity for Sunnyvale. This is an exciting project to work on.”
But Hom also pointed out there are many other important projects ahead for the City. “The new General Plan effort updates the City’s priorities and establishes the future vision for Sunnyvale. In addition, there is work to be done on the El Camino Real corridor, which can be so much more than it now is.”
Hom says he is a strong believer in good urban planning. He recognizes that Sunnyvale is a very strong community, and sees many opportunities to have a positive impact on the City.
Hom comes to Sunnyvale from the City of San Leandro, where he has served as CDD director since 2000; he has also served in senior planning positions in the cities of Alameda and Hayward. Hom earned a Masters of Public Administration degree with an emphasis in public policy development at California State University East Bay, and a Master’s of Urban and Regional Planning from California State University San Jose. Hom also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Landscape Architecture, with an environmental planning emphasis, from the University of California, Berkeley. In addition, Hom is a licensed landscape architect.
Hom plans to relocate to Sunnyvale, which was his home when he attended Homestead High School.
