SUNNYVALE –Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers will conduct a DUI safety and sobriety checkpoint from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m., Saturday, September 1, during the Labor Day holiday weekend. The primary purpose of the checkpoint is public education.
For many, the Labor Day weekend signifies the end of summer, and it is not unusual to see a considerable amount of drinking during the holiday period. DPS wants to reduce the risk to all who use our roads.
The checkpoint provides an opportunity to locate drivers who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and remove them from local roadways. Each year, drivers who are under the influence cause a disproportionately high number of collisions, many of which result in injury or death.
Sunnyvale will operate the checkpoint with assistance from other law enforcement agencies. Cars traveling northbound on Mathilda Avenue between Maude and San Aleso Avenues will be randomly stopped and checked. Officers will look at the safety of the vehicle, the operator’s license and state of sobriety.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through the California Office of Traffic Safety.
