COMMUNITY FORUM TO CONSIDER SUNNYVALE BRANCH LIBRARY

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – Sunnyvale Public Library staff are seeking community input about the possibility of opening a branch library in Sunnyvale. A community forum is scheduled at the Library on Thursday, May 29 at 6:30 p.m. All members of the public are invited to attend this community forum and consider whether a branch library is needed, where one would be located, what services it would offer, how much it would cost and other issues.

Last November, Measure B – the ballot measure created to fund the construction of a new main library – received 59 percent of the vote, but needed a two-thirds majority to pass. At Sunnyvale’s annual Budget and Study Issues Workshop in January, Council asked staff to study the possibility of opening a branch library in a leased facility. While last year’s “Library of the Future” study explored the construction of a joint library with Columbia Middle School to serve northern Sunnyvale, Council has directed staff to consider all areas of Sunnyvale be reviewed for potential lease space, rather than constructing a new building for a branch library.

The Sunnyvale Public Library is located at 665 W. Olive Ave., across from City Hall. Free parking is always available, and VTA line 54 serves the Library. Members of the community who are unable to participate in the community forum are invited to send their ideas by e-mail to futurelib@ci.sunnyvale.ca.us. More information on Library programs and activities is available on the Library’s Web site at www.sunnyvalelibrary.org, or by calling the Library at (408) 730-7300, TDD (408) 730-7501.
