Marijuana Grow Fires up Apartment Complex
On August 16 at 8:05 a.m., DPS personnel responded to a report of a structure fire on San Juan Drive. Upon arrival at the six-unit apartment complex, personnel discovered two apartments fully engulfed in fire. Crews were able to contain the fire to the two apartments. The other four apartments and adjacent apartment complex did not suffer any damage. A total of seven apparatus and 34 personnel were involved in the firefighting operation.
There were no injuries as a result of the fire. The residents of the two involved apartments were provided housing by Red Cross. The investigators found that the fire started as a result of the resident illegally adding electrical wiring to support a marijuana growing operation. The damage estimate has not been determined.

State of the City Event
Visitors to the City’s Web site can now watch the 2010 State of the City celebration online. City Fleet Replacements
With the consolidation of user divisions, the City has reduced its fleet size from 540 units to 522 units. This reduction will provide a 20-year cost savings to the fleet replacement budget of over $540,000. All fleet vehicles are on a programmed replacement schedule based on life expectancy. Frequently these life expectancies are extended as the units are still operationally sound. This year there were 108 units scheduled for replacement based on each unit's life expectancy. However, after assessing each unit, the number of units to actually be replaced was reduced to 45 vehicles, resulting in additional cost savings in FY 2010/11.

NOVA Workforce Board Expands Relationships with Consortium Cities
This year the NOVA Workforce Board launched a new initiative with the goal to add value to what NOVA provides to their important customers – the seven consortium cities – in the services provided to their residents and businesses. In order to accomplish this, Board members whose companies do business in a particular city volunteered to be a liaison to that city and to participate in meetings with the cities about the work NOVA is doing and ways NOVA can improve upon their relationship with them.
