SIGNS

The number of signs, types of signs, and size of signs allowed depends on several factors including lot size, number of business on the site, and square footage of the building. The following are general sign standards for the City of Sunnyvale.

NUMBER OF SIGNS ALLOWED FOR EACH BUSINESS

The number and type of signs allowed for each business depends on several factors:

  •  Residential or Non-Residential Use

  •  Zoning District

  •  Number of Businesses on a Lot

  •  Size of Business

  •  Number of Street Frontages

The following is a breakdown of the number and type of signs allowed for each type of business and business location.

Non-Residential Uses – One Business on a Lot

One Street Frontage

One ground sign or one wall sign

If the business is >10,000 sq. ft. in floor area, both one ground sign and one wall sign is allowed.

Two or More Contiguous Street Frontages

One wall sign per street frontage, unless restricted by a previous Use Permit or Special Development Permit

One ground sign and one wall sign. The ground sign must be visible from both streets or be located on a frontage with no wall sign.

Two or More Non-Contiguous Street Frontages

One ground sign or one wall sign per frontage.

If the business is >10,000 sq. ft. in floor area, both one ground sign and one wall sign is allowed.

Non-Residential Uses – Two or More Business on a Lot

One wall sign per main public entrance and one for each building elevation of the tenant space that faces a street and one ground sign per street frontage.

Residential Uses

One ground sign or one wall sign per street frontage

Additional Ground Sign

If the ground sign option is selected, a second ground sign may be installed along any street frontage that exceeds 500 ft.

Secondary Wall Signs (not to exceed 12 sq. ft.)

  • If the business has only ground sign identification, a secondary wall sign may be located next to the main entrance.
  • If there is more than one public entrance to the business, a secondary wall sign may be located adjacent to any public entrance other than the main entrance of the building.
  • Secondary wall signs are prohibited for residential uses.
