Downtown Revitalization Kicks Into High Gear
Sunnyvale, CA: 12/19/00
Another major step in the revitalization of downtown Sunnyvale occurred Friday, December 15 with the official groundbreaking for the construction of three office buildings with 450,000 square feet and an additional 10,000 square feet of ground floor space for retail use. The complex, on a 5.9 acre site at the corner of Mathilda and Washington, will include 1,600 parking spaces, with 250 public parking spaces, contained in a four-level underground parking facility. An additional 320 spaces of underground parking will be available to the public for evening and weekend parking. There will also be 100 new street-level public parking spaces. The Mozart Development Company is developing the project.Fencing has gone up at the construction site and the City has taken a number of steps to limit the inconveniences of construction. Free valet parking is available seven days a week through December 24 and a free shuttle service will help people move quickly and easily from the valet service to the other end of the WAVE/Town Center Mall. After Christmas, the valet parking will be available Monday – Saturday through the end of construction. The valet parking can be found in the Town and Country Center, off Frances Avenue. New surface parking is also available next to the Post Office in Town and Country.
The City has also opened an office downtown to give businesses, customers and visitors the latest information on the downtown revitalization. Located at 100 S. Murphy in the Historic Del Monte Building, the office is open 11 AM – 3 PM, Monday to Friday and 9 AM – 1 PM on Saturday.
Karen Davis, Economic Development Manager, stated, "the excitement is building downtown. The new offices and other efforts underway will bring vitality to downtown Sunnyvale and will provide the public an expanded opportunity to use and enjoy a unique downtown setting. The new office space will be very attractive to tenants because of the proximity to the train station, shops, restaurants, and housing."
Additional revitalization efforts are in progress. The City is in the process of securing the services of a landscape architecture firm to design a 1.8 acre public plaza at Frances and Evelyn that will be a focal point for downtown activities.
In January, demolition of the center portion of the shopping center garage on Mathilda will begin in order to build a pedestrian walkway and 20 screen theater complex. Work on a new 900-space parking garage is underway at Iowa and Sunnyvale. Once that garage is completed, a 1,300-space garage will be built on the Macy’s side of the complex at Washington.
