Sunnyvale Bike Network Growing Rapidly

Sunnyvale, CA (1/3/00) – In the last few months the City of Sunnyvale has added more than 4 miles to its existing 18 mile network of on-street bicycle lanes. "The City is committed to encouraging bicycle travel. These additions to the network are yet another step toward that goal," said Director of Public Works Mark Dettle.

The City is pleased to announce the opening of the following bike lanes:

The construction of the new bike lanes is a direct result of the recommendations of the City of Sunnyvale’s Bicycle Opportunity Study, which was completed in 1998. The study determined the feasibility of bike lane construction for all major streets in the City, and recommended probable actions based on existing conditions. The City is systematically implementing the recommendations from the study.

From the Bicycle Opportunity Study, the City Council adopted a work plan to prepare a Bicycle Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Study. The Bike CIP Study, adopted by the City Council on December 19, 2000, identifies resources and presents a program of projects and studies according to the available resources.

A map of the bike lanes in Sunnyvale is attached. Look forward to more bicycle network improvements in the future.
