Contract Agreement Reached with Service Employees International Union, Local 715

Sunnyvale, CA – The Sunnyvale City Council adopted a Memorandum of Agreement with its part-time employees represented by SEIU, Local 715 at its February 6 meeting.

"Our goal in the negotiations was to ensure market competitiveness for our regular, part-time employees, and we have achieved that over the life of a four year contract," stated City Manager Robert S. LaSala.

The contract calls for a wage increase this month, and then each July for the life of the contract. Additional benefit enhancements are included as well. Specifically, the agreement calls for an across the board 5% wage increase effective February 1. Some classifications will receive an additional adjustment. In July 2002 and July 2003, salary increases will be based on market surveys, with a minimum increase of 3%, and in July 2004 salary increases will be based completely on market surveys.

"The negotiations went very smoothly because both sides came to the table with the same goals in mind, and we walked away with an agreement that was supported by our total membership" said Mary Lee, Worksite Organizing Director, SEIU, Local 715.

"The City believes that the agreement represents a common sense "win-win" for both sides," LaSala concluded. "As with our other bargaining units, this agreement ensures that our employees will receive market driven salaries and that the City can reasonably predict and fund our labor costs."

The general membership of SEIU, Local 715 unanimously voted to approve the tentative agreement before it was presented to the City Council.

The entire negotiation process only took three months. The City Manager praised the work of the negotiating teams on both sides.
