Poster Contest Teaches Kids About Fire Safety

Each February, Neighborhood Resource Officers with the City’s Public Safety Department present fire safety lessons to students at Sunnyvale’s 16 elementary schools. At the end of the month, the students are invited to participate in a Fire Safety Poster Contest that helps demonstrate what they’ve learned and provides feedback to officers about the effectiveness of the lessons.

Administrators from participating schools submitted the top three posters in each grade, and representatives from the Kiwanis Club selected the winners. Winning posters were selected based on creativity, design, and key fire safety concepts taught to the students by Neighborhood Resource Officers.

This year’s winners are as follows:

Kindergarten:

1st place, AriannaThompson - Fairwood School
2^nd place, Carrie Niblett – Cumberland School
3^rd place, Lucy Scott – Ponderosa School

First Grade:

1^st place, Joojay Huyn – Challenger School
2^nd place, Ruchika Podury – Challenger School
3^rd place, Victor Rodrigo – Cherry Chase School

Second Grade:

1^st place, David Delgado – Challenger School
2^nd place, Joey Maloof – Vargas School
3^rd place, Annie Hsu – Cherry Chase School

Third Grade:

1^st place, Johnny Wolfe – St. Cyprian School
2^nd place, Frey Kiessling – Nimitz School
3^rd place, Sahana Rajasekar – Challenger School

Fourth Grade:

1^st place, Stacy Hwang – Cherry Chase School
2^nd place, Amruya Patil – Bishop School
3^rd place, Parijat Chakrabarti – Challenger School

Fifth Grade:

1^st place, Angela Wang – Stocklmeir School
2^nd place, Andrey Tonrovidov – Vargas School
3^rd place, Tiffany Vu – Lakewood School

Winners were treated to a pizza luncheon provided by Papa John’s Pizza at the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce on March 12. They were also honored by the Mayor, the Director of Public Safety, and members of the Kiwanis Club at the March 20 City Council meeting.
