Poster Contest Teaches Kids About Fire Safety
Sunnyvale, CA (3/22/01) – Eighteen elementary school students were named winners in Sunnyvale’s 23rd Annual Fire Safety Poster Contest sponsored by the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, the Kiwanis Club of Silicon Valley, and the Chamber of Commerce. Winners were recognized at an awards presentation ceremony held during the March 20, 2001 City Council meeting.
"This is a wonderful way to teach kids the basics of fire safety," said Sunnyvale Director of Public Safety
Ernie Bakin. "By coming out to the schools and engaging the students in a fun project, we hope to build a foundation for lifelong fire prevention."Each February, Neighborhood Resource Officers with the City’s Public Safety Department present fire safety lessons to students at Sunnyvale’s 16 elementary schools. At the end of the month, the students are invited to participate in a Fire Safety Poster Contest that helps demonstrate what they’ve learned and provides feedback to officers about the effectiveness of the lessons.
Administrators from participating schools submitted the top three posters in each grade, and representatives from the Kiwanis Club selected the winners. Winning posters were selected based on creativity, design, and key fire safety concepts taught to the students by Neighborhood Resource Officers.
