City of Sunnyvale Hosts 10th Annual Citywide Garage Sales May 5 & 6

Sunnyvale, CA (5/1/01)- Households throughout Sunnyvale are preparing for the 10th annual Citywide Garage Sale—a Mecca for garage sale aficionados. Shoppers can find thousands of treasures at Sunnyvale’s award winning Citywide Garage Sale on Saturday and Sunday, May 5 and 6. Collectibles, furniture, sports gear, antiques, and a multitude of household artifacts will be sold at the more than 500 garage sales to be held at individual homes throughout Sunnyvale. Sales hours are on Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Lists of the official sale locations will be available at City Hall and on the City’s website at www.ci.sunnyvale.ca.us/recycle/garagesales.htm. They can also be picked up at any Sunnyvale 7-Eleven after 12 noon on Friday, May 4. Addresses of the Sunnyvale 7-Elevens markets will be in the San Jose Mercury News on Saturday, May 5. Sale lists will also be available at the Coldwell Banker office, 480 S. Mathilda Ave., (at the corner of Olive) and the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce, 101 W. Olive (at the corner of Murphy) on Friday, May 4.

The City of Sunnyvale coordinates this event to encourage the sale of reusable items rather than discarding them in the landfill. "This project brings solid waste and recycling issues right into people’s homes with an emphasis on reuse and giving rather than throwing away," said Mark Bowers, the solid waste program manager for the City of Sunnyvale.

The event is an all-around-win. Shoppers like the adventure of seeking and finding treasures and bargains in a safe environment. Sellers like the extra cash and extra living space. The environment benefits from reduced waste. Perhaps one of the most valuable aspects is how well the event fosters a strong sense of community spirit. "People enjoy the opportunity to get acquainted with neighbors, build community trust, and spend quality time with family members," said the recycling supervisor Rich Gurney.

Group sales used as fundraisers are on the increase. Typical of such fundraisers is the one held by the Sunnyvale Public Safety Officers Association. According to Lieutenant Phil Carr, "We may raise funds for projects like Our Daily Bread, a charity that feeds the homeless and disadvantages, or a battered women’s shelter. We look for a need and then pull together to sell our stuff so that someone else benefits."

This annual event is a partnership with support from the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce, Coldwell Banker, and 7-Eleven, Inc. The project won a Waste Cutters Award from the California Integrated Waste Management Board in 2000.
