Sunnyvale Is Twelfth Most Kid-Friendly Suburb in Nation
Sunnyvale,
CA (August 27, 2001) -- In the recently
published Kid-Friendly Cities Report Card compiled by Zero Population Growth (ZPG), the City of
Sunnyvale received an overall ‘A’ grade, ranking twelfth in the nation among
cities of comparable size. The report card is part of the eighth bi-annual ZPG
Children’s Environmental Index.
Within the three groups of communities defined
by ZPG: as major cities, independent
cities, and “component cities”
(suburbs and outer cities), each city was graded in seven individual
categories designed to illuminate the well-being of children: environment,
population change, education, economics, public safety, community life, and
health. Sunnyvale placed twelfth among
the 74 cities within the component cities
category. Sunnyvale performed
especially well in three categories, receiving honor roll grades ‘A+’ in the
categories of public safety and health and an ‘A’ in the environment. The
average population for cities in this category is 155,000.
According to ZPG, cities that received high grades did so because they successfully meet children's needs. Their index of "kid-friendliness" refers to the quality of life and services in a city. The purpose of the ranking is to present the best available data on the social, economic, educational and physical environment in our cities. The ZPG Report used a carefully chosen and broad set of data on the status of children under the age of 18 who live in cities with population of 100,000 or more. All data sources used for the report are the most recent available.
