Expanded Tennis Center Opens on September 8

Sunnyvale, CA (8/28/01) – A grand opening will be held on Saturday, September 8 from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. to celebrate the expansion of the Sunnyvale’s Las Palmas Tennis Center.  The celebration will kick off with light refreshments and a ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by fun activities and informational booths.

The expanded tennis center includes three more courts – bringing the total number of lighted courts to 16 - and new services, including a café and catering service.  Players will also enjoy more parking spaces and beautiful landscaping. The new enhancements will enable the center to host larger, exciting events like Sunnyvale’s first ever U.S. Tennis Association Professional Futures Tournament which recently attracted 120 professional players from around the world.

“With these enhancements, the Las Palmas Tennis Center will contribute even more to the quality of life in Sunnyvale,” said Robert Walker, Director of Parks and Recreation.

Following the ribbon-cutting, City Councilmember Jim Roberts and Parks and Recreation Department Director Robert Walker will play a short exhibition match with Geoff Ainscow, President of the Sunnyvale Tennis Club, and Jan Young, Pro/Manager of the Sunnyvale Municipal Tennis Center.  Attendees can participate in a free instructional clinic, fast serve contest, and a Wilson tennis racket demo day test.

The tennis center, located at 755 S. Mathilda Avenue adjacent to Las Palmas Park in Sunnyvale, offers singles and doubles play, lessons for all age groups and ability levels, and practice clinics.  Tournaments are hosted at the center, and tennis equipment can be purchased at the tennis shop.  The grand opening is sponsored by the City of Sunnyvale, the Las Palmas Tennis Center, the Sunnyvale Tennis Club, and the Centre Court Café.  For more information about the grand opening, contact the City of Sunnyvale at (408) 730-7625.  Information about the tennis center is available on the City’s website at www.ci.sunnyvale.ca.us/leisure-services/tennis/ or by calling the center at (408) 732-2130.
